ABOUT JULIUS

In 2015, Julius persuaded his employer to start posting on Twitter

Long before science communication with social media was mainstream, Julius discovered the power of social platforms to share scientific insights and stories. Just as he began his PhD journey at Fraunhofer in Karlsruhe, Germany, he realized the untapped potential of social media for research organizations. Disappointed that his own institute wasn’t using Twitter, Julius took matters into his own hands. He signed up an official Twitter account for the institute and informed the head of communications that he’d hand over control—on the condition that they’d use it to share the science happening at Fraunhofer.

Since then he became a social media first science communicator

Surrounded by world-class scientists at Fraunhofer, Julius began his own journey in science communication. He co-founded enPower, an energy transition podcast where he interviewed colleagues—a project now streamed over 850,000 times. He took to Twitter, sharing scientific insights to amplify their reach, and in 2021 launched a second podcast focused on helping scientists use social media to share their work for real-world impact.

Julius has become a thought after consultant, speaker, workshop host, and soon-to-be author

What began as a personal endeavor to share science has become Julius’s mission to bridge academia and public understanding. Partnering with top European universities, he creates strategies that empower scientists as ambassadors of their work. Through talks, workshop series, strategy sessions, and his forthcoming book with Cambridge University Press, Julius equips researchers to share their findings effectively.

With over five years of experience, he has delivered 25+ talks, led extended workshops, and achieved 900,000+ streams across his podcasts—empowering scientists to amplify their research, engage new audiences, and make a lasting impact.

Julius has hosted over 250 podcast episodes (> 1 million streams)

Julius is the host of three successful podcasts, each bringing unique insights to critical topics:

Science Communication Accelerator Podcast: With over 60 episodes, this podcast explores how researchers can effectively share their work and create impact through science communication (currently paused as Julius is writing a Science Communication Book for Cambridge University Press).

enPower Energiewende Podcast: With 120+ episodes, this series dives deep into the energy transition in Germany, covering challenges, innovations, and policy developments.

NTNU Energy Transition Podcast: Featuring 75+ episodes, this podcast focuses on the future of energy, discussing strategies, technologies, and collaborations shaping the energy transition.

Through these platforms, Julius connects audiences with ideas, experts, and solutions to drive impactful conversations.

Julius is a researcher at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Julius studied business at HSBA Hamburg and completed a Master’s in Sustainable Development with a focus on energy policy at Kassel University, including a semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. He earned his PhD in Innovation Studies from Utrecht University. Throughout his academic and professional journey, Julius has lived in the UK, US, Uruguay, Lebanon, Germany, and Norway. Since 2021, he has been a researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, focusing on sustainability transitions, with a particular emphasis on the energy transition and clean tech (click here for publications).

Julius lives with his wife Lillian in Trondheim, Norway

After completing his PhD, Julius moved to Norway to join his longtime girlfriend—now wife—Lillian and accepted a research position at NTNU, the largest University in Norway. Here he researches clean tech innovation system dynamics, and currently co-supervised two PhD students. When he’s not on campus at NTNU or teaching science communication to scientists across Europe, you can find him on his road bike, on backcountry skis, or by a bonfire with friends in the mountains of central Norway.
